One person was killed in the explosion at the refinery in Wynnewood, Garvin County sheriff Larry Rhodes confirmed. Another person was taken to a hospital by an emergency medical helicopter. Rhodes said he is not sure if the explosion was a boiler explosion but that it was a unit used in the refining process.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol has reopened all roads shut down due to the explosion. 8:25 p.m. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has shut down State Highway 17A from Interstate 35 to Highway 77 and Highway 77 north and south of Wynnewood due to “some type of explosion” at the refinery. 7:50 p.m. Fire crews are battling a fire Friday night at the Wynnewood Refinery, authorities reported. The American Red Cross is sending volunteers to Wynnewood to provide water, Gatorade and snacks for the firefighters, Red Cross Regional Director Ken Garcia said. The Garvin County sheriff's office and the Wynnewood Refinery have not returned phone calls from The Oklahoman seeking comment.
